Serious about safety
We take safety very seriously, and have designed our system to meet strict automotive standards. Our Hymotion™ Plug-in Conversion Modules have been crash tested in accordance with National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulations. Safety is addressed both at the individual cell level and at the system level. At the cell level, we conduct a variety of safety tests to ensure that cells made with our Nanophosphate™ technology have excellent abuse tolerance. Please visit the A123Systems' primary website for detailed safety information.
At the system level, our L5 module contains a Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the voltage of each cell in the pack as well as the temperature of the individual battery modules. This information is fed into the electronics controller which automatically terminates charge or discharge in the event that any safety limits are exceeded.
Further, we incorporate crash sensors designed to disconnect the pack in the case of an accident. Our Hymotion Plug-in Conversion Modules are designed to withstand crashes (as can be seen in the videos to the right), abusive conditions, extreme temperatures, and all vehicle transport conditions. Other considerations like a driving lockout when the car is plugged in to prevent you from driving away while plugged in; as well as high voltage service disconnects are integral to overall system safety.
A123SYSTEMS Battery manufacturing
A123Systems' Hymotion Plug-in Conversion Modules are manufactured using our highly abuse tolerant Nanophosphate™ lithium ion technology. We have successfully demonstrated with test data that our technology is safe according to UL standards when overcharged, over discharged and subjected to mechanical abuse. Our Hymotion modules have been crash-tested and certified to meet applicable federal safety standards.
